Sammie Jean Toney

September 23, 1940 — February 5, 2025

Dallas, Tx

We gather today with hearts full of love and gratitude to celebrate the life of a truly extraordinary woman—Sammie Porter Toney. While we mourn her passing, we also honor the beautiful legacy she leaves behind. She was a woman of strength, intelligence, and kindness, whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

Sammie’s journey began with a bright mind and an unstoppable drive for excellence. She graduated as the valedictorian of George Washington Carver High School’s Class of 1958 in Dawson, Texas—a testament to her dedication and brilliance. She carried that same determination throughout her life, excelling in every endeavor she pursued.

Her professional career was marked by hard work and commitment. She dedicated years of service to Lord & Taylor Department Store, Sears, the United States Postal Service, and Bank of America before retiring. No matter where she worked, she left a lasting impression with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering work ethic.

Beyond her career, Sammie had a deep love for basketball. Whether playing the game or watching it, the sport brought her immense joy. She especially loved cheering for her favorite player, Steph Curry, and could discuss the game with passion and insight.

But above all, Sammie’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and even a great-great-grandmother. She shared a beautiful life with her late husband, James Craig Toney, and together, they built a legacy of love and resilience. She was the proud mother of Randy Porter, Craig Toney (Sharon) and Shallanda ToneyBarrington (David), and she now joins her beloved Husband and daughter, Rhonda Toney, in eternal peace.

Her love extended to her many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom was blessed to know the warmth of her embrace and the wisdom of her words. Sammie was the heart of her family, always offering encouragement and laughter
